While most people do not think about fine arts and lingerie in conjunction with each other, French pin-ups are some of the best examples of retro art, particularly during the period know as La Belle Epoque. It is exemplified by the vintage French lingerie leading to an an art form which is both retro and amazingly sexy at the same time. While it is easy to refer to the pin-up girls as cheesy, there is a great deal of artistic effort shown in the drawings, paintings, and photography given the specific angles, lighting, and placement of the lingerie on the models or focal point of the paintings.

Of course, when it comes to vintage French lingerie pin-up girls, the most obvious centre of attention in the art or pin-ups is the classic French corset. Drawn or captured on film in soft hues of pink, teasing hues of white and black, or ironic polka dots, the French corset is easily the most recognizable piece of vintage French lingerie shown in pin-ups around the world. The fact that the corset closely defines the body as it snugly cinches in the waist made it popular all over the world as the way to draw a man’s eyes.

Outside of what men obviously prefer, vintage French lingerie items such as the corset also have an extremely artistic element to them as well. If you look past the attempt to portray a woman as a sexual object, you can see the way that artists carefully painted the bend and curves of the model into the pieces of art based on the corset. In fact, the curves serve as the focal point of most paintings with the model bent appropriately to show the sharp intake of the waist nicely contradicting the full shoulders and legs of the model.

This same principle is usually used for other items of vintage French lingerie in the pin-ups as well. For instance, in many pieces of art from the 30’s-50’s you see the women bending slightly over to pick an item up, reach for an item on a shelf, or simply posed in a seductive pose that includes some leaning.

This is once again to show off the curve of the waist against the full tops and bottoms of the women which is an artful way to celebrate the beauty of a woman’s curves. It is also interesting to note that in this era women were portrayed with fuller figures and full shapes instead of skinny and skeleton like making the curves and correct artful positioning even more dramatic.

Also popular are see through nightgowns and lace cover-ups given the fact that sometimes what you cannot see is more attractive than what you can. In these paintings it is easy to see how the vintage French lingerie items add an extra artistic element since they always manage to blow in just the right fashion to draw your eye to the painting without giving away the show so to speak.
